Michigan Academic Library Council Goals, Objectives and Action Statements


Goal 1: Provide a visible presence and active voice for Michigan academic libraries

Objective 1: Work cooperatively with library-related and other organizations, especially the Michigan Library Association (MLA), the Michigan Library Consortium (MLC), and the Library of Michigan (LOM).

Action Statement: Receive reports from academic representatives on these boards about issues of importance to academic libraries to share with membership.

Action Statement: Provide feedback from MALC on academic issues or on general issues that may impact academic libraries.

Action Statement: Work toward statewide strategic plan multi-type libraries (speak in one voice)

Objective 2: Be a proactive presence/voice on issues that affect academic libraries and supportive of initiatives for academic libraries.

Action Statement: Review and respond to materials forwarded from Michigan’s ALA Councilor(s) on such issues as the PATRIOT Act, academic freedom, censorship, etc.[GIVEN]

Action Statement: Review and respond to materials forwarded from MLC’s representative to OCLC.

Goal 2: Develop and sustain a communication network among the MALC libraries

Objective 1: The Executive Committee of MALC will distribute relevant information to the membership. Library directors/deans in turn will share MALC information with their staffs when appropriate.[GIVEN]

Action Statement: Distribute relevant communiqués from LOM, MLA, and MLC to membership. [GIVEN]

Action Statement: Forward minutes of the MALC annual meeting to all members.[GIVEN]

Action Statement: Forward minutes of the MALC Executive Board meetings to all members.[GIVEN]

Action Statement: Place all MALC minutes on the MALC web site. [GIVEN]

Action Statement: Place minutes of the constituent groups on the MALC web site.

Objective 2 : MALC will create and maintain a website which informs and supports communication among its members. [GIVEN]

Action Statement: A University of Detroit Mercy instructional designer will create the MALC web site with initial content provided by the MALC Executive Committee.

Action Statement: All MALC members will actively contribute to the web site.

Objective 3: Members of MALC will complete an annual activities report based on questions written and approved by MALC, and MALC will post this information on its website.

Action Statement: MALC Executive Committee will distribute annual activity report survey no later than six weeks prior to annual meeting. [GIVEN]

Objective 4: MALC libraries will invite other members to their relevant professional development opportunities on a space available basis.

Action Statement: MALC libraries will use the MALC listserv to communicate professional development opportunities open to MALC libraries.

Objective 5: Academic library deans/directors will actively participate in and promote MALC as an organization.

Action Statement: Deans/directors will respond to the annual activity report request, attend meetings, and contribute to the role of MALC.

Goal 3: Promote the value, resources and contributions of MI academic libraries.

Objective 1: Serve as a clearinghouse and archive for library-related press releases, citations to articles about Michigan academic libraries, bibliography of scholarly activities, and awards received by academic library employees by placing the information on the MALC web site.

Action Statement: Deans/Directors will contribute library-related press releases for inclusion on the MALC web site.

Action Statement: Deans/Directors will contribute information on any awards bestowed (2000 forward) on library employees or the library as a whole for inclusion on the MALC web site.

Action Statement: Deans/Directors will contribute information on state-wide, regional, or national (library-related?) offices held by library employees for inclusion on the MALC web site.

Objective 2: Encourage all academic libraries to participate in projects such as MeLCat, Making of Modern Michigan, etc.

Action Statement: On MALC’s website, provide a list of academic libraries participating in MeLCat.

Objective 3: Provide a forum to stimulate expanded access to information resources for Michigan citizens, especially students and faculty.

Goal 4: Maximize access to resources, information and library services for members of Michigan academic communities, as well as citizens of the State.

Objective 1: Develop the MALC web site further as a portal for learning about and accessing significant resources of interest to the Michigan library and academic community.[GIVEN]

Action Statement: On MALC’s web site, provide lists of libraries that have unique resources and collections.

Action Statement: On MALC’s web site, provide links to digitized collections in Michigan academic libraries.

Action Statement: On MALC’s web site, provide a list of ILS systems contracted for by Michigan academic libraries along with contact information.

Objective 2: Promote more open reciprocal borrowing privileges (books, periodicals, media) among academic libraries.

Action Statement: Encourage member libraries to participate in MeLCat.

Objective 3: Promote cooperative group purchases among and between Michigan’s academic libraries to leverage scarce budgetary/financial resources.

Action Statement: Drawing on the collective interests of the MALC membership, recommend to appropriate funding organizations subject-specific electronic resources for group purchase.
