The Michigan Academic Library Council (MALC) shall serve as the
coordinating body and advocate for academic libraries in Michigan.
Membership came together in 1999 to enhance and promote the ability of
each library to meet its mission by improving cooperation, resource
sharing, and services.
Membership
Membership is comprised of all academic libraries in Michigan as
represented by their respective Director/Dean. For institutions with
multiple libraries, the overall Director/Dean shall be the official
representative. At institutions where there is not a single designated
library leader, the institution shall select one "official"
representative.
Executive Committee
The Executive Committee shall be comprised of six representatives,
two representatives from each type of academic library, e.g., two from
the public institutions (COLD), two from the private institutions
(DIAL-M), and two from the community colleges (MCCL). Each group will
select their own representatives.
The selection of representatives shall occur at least one month prior
to the annual meeting and new representatives shall take office at the
end of the annual meeting.
The Executive Committee shall select a Chairperson from among its
members. The Chairperson of the Executive Committee shall have full
voting rights.
Should the Chairperson of the Executive Committee resign, a new
Chairperson shall be selected from the remaining members of the
Committee to fill the unexpired term of the office.
Terms of Office
Each type of library will have two representatives, one elected each
year. All representatives will serve two-year terms. Representatives
may serve two consecutive terms.
Should a person resign or leave the Executive Committee before the
completion of a specified term, a replacement shall be selected by the
libraries of the constituency (COLD, DIAL-M, or MCCL) for which the seat
is vacant.
Committees and Task Forces
The Executive Committee may establish task forces and standing committees as needed.
Meetings
The Members of the Michigan Academic Library Council shall meet annually at a time to be determined by the Executive Committee.
The Executive Committee will meet quarterly and may meet more often
as needed. The Executive Committee may meet via conference telephone
call or electronic means (e-mails, discussion board, etc.) if needed.
Finances
The Michigan Academic Library Council may agree to assess dues of
each member for the payment of such costs as are deemed necessary by the
membership for the effective operation of the organization. If the
members agree to be assessed dues, the Executive Committee may set the
amount of dues for a specified time period.
The Executive Committee also may be empowered by the Council to seek grants.
The Executive Committee may name an organization or institution as fiscal agent.
Approved November 5, 1999 with amendments by the assembled library
directors of Michigan Public Colleges and Universities, Independent
Colleges and Universities, and Community Colleges.
